Osteo Arthritis

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative form of arthritis that is caused because of break down in cartilage or its damage. Cartilage is the slippery fluid (protein) substance which surrounds all joints to facilitate smooth movement. When inflammation is caused in joints they become tender, red, warm and swollen. This eventually affects surrounding muscles and bones causing severe pain in the affected area.

Among the over 100 different forms of arthritis, osteoarthritis is the most common, affecting more than over 22 million people in the United States alone. It is common in both males and females usually after over 50 years of age.

Joints that bear body weight like spine, hips, and knees are the most vulnerable for this form of arthritis.

  • Spine or Back bone – The cervical and lumbar spine are composed of vertebral bones that are connected to each other with joints have cushion discs between each level. When these joints are subject to wear and tear overtime, can cause disc degeneration resulting in osteoarthritis. This leads to severe pain in neck and back bone.

  • Hip – This is the main weight bearing bone of body. When hip get affected with arthritis it causes pain in the groin and knee. Patient suffers severe pain while walking, cycling or bending down.

  • Knee – one more vulnerable area for osteoarthritis. Affected knee may develop a prominent area on knee and crunching sound is noticed while in motion. Patients’ complaint pain while walking or crossing of legs.

Sometimes osteoarthritis is characterized by putting down new bone, not in the correct position which causes some joints to appear larger and misshapen. This unnecessary bony growth coupled with loss of cartilage make the space between the bones smaller causing bones getting rubbed against each other when moved. This causes severe pain and patient suffers with acute stiffness and fatigue.

Main causes for this could be attributed to age, sex and genetics. Local factors like prior injury or deformity in the joint, obesity, muscle weakness, malnutrition are also found responsible for causing this painful disease.

Osteoarthritis can be prevented up to a large extent by maintaining a healthy life style. Maintaining healthy diet, regular morning walks and light stretch exercises to maintain muscle tone from early adulthood can eradicate cause of many health complications though out life.

Acupuncture, chiropractic manipulation and many herbal remedies claim for providing relieve to osteoarthritis patients but medically none is proven yet.
